The Village of Llangynidr
Llangynidr is situated midway between Abergavenny and Brecon. Four miles from Crickhowell and six miles from the heads of the valley road, (A465). It is a very picturesque village on the south bank of the River Usk, deep in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Its name derives from St Cynidr a sixth century Welsh saint. The village first grew around the church in the upper village in medieval times.
In the centre of the village is a large recreation park. Facilities include a well equipped children`s play area, two tennis courts, two football pitches, a cricket pitch and a mini skateboard area all in the shadow of a large, modern village hall. A car park is conveniently located opposite these facilities. In the western part of Llangynidr, the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal passes through the five locks for which the village is renowned. It is ideal for a stroll along the towpath which is partly wheelchair friendly. A more demanding walk might take a circular route through the village or onto the mountain with spectacular views overlooking the Brecon Beacons. The mountain of Tor y Foel overlooks this area in the Brecon Beacons National Parks.
